When the sunglasses have been used for a long time, will his UV filter effect remain the same?
If you have a favorite pair of sunglasses, you've probably been using them for years.
Do well-worn sunglasses still protect your eyes from ultraviolet (UV) damage?
The study did not directly answer the question of whether UV protection deteriorated. The only way to know for sure is to test your sunglasses.
Sunglasses with the recommended protection will filter out all UV rays. UV rays can damage the surface tissues of the eye, the cornea and lens. Over time, UV damage can increase the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye diseases. These conditions can reduce your vision.
A 2016 study from the University of São Paulo in Brazil looked at tests for the adequacy of UV protection in sunglasses. "It's different than testing whether the UV protection in sunglasses goes away," said Jeff Pettey, MD, an assistant professor of ophthalmology at Moran Center University in Utah and a spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
The researchers found that the Brazilian manufacturer's tests may have underestimated the amount of UV exposure that would cause eyeglasses over time. It's unclear whether these findings mean anything for the US sunglass test. Exposure to UV radiation in Brazil is higher than exposure in the United States.
While the study raises more questions than answers, Dr. Pettey said consumers shouldn't panic or rush to switch their beloved shades. No one currently recommends wearing sunglasses in retirement.
In recent years, UV blocking technology has improved. Most sunglasses today have UV protection embedded in the lens, rather than coated on it. If you're concerned about the age and safety of your sunglasses, you can have them tested at an optician equipped with a UV meter.
If you're ready to buy a new pair of sunglasses, Dr. Pettey offers these tips for choosing the most protective sunglasses: Look for a label that says "100 percent UVA and UVB protection" or "100 percent UV protection 400." Choose a larger frame that covers the eyes and surrounding skin. The frame wraps around the sides of the face for maximum protection.
